The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
Are you drunk or just stupid,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Mike McFadden
The only way the Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments) can be repealed is by calling a constitutional convention which is near impossible. All amendments after the 10th can be repealed or amended by being proposed by 3/4 of both the House & Senate and then be ratified by 3/4 of states legislatures.
Anyone attempting to change our constitution should be arrested and tried for treason.
Man, you people are stupid. The 17th amendment allows the people to choose their own Senators. If you repeal it, then you’re just going to get ultra-partisan politics, where senators are selected by whoever has the majority in your state house.in 95% of states, that majority never, EVER, changes. You think politicians are bad now? Wait until they only have to answer to the state house and not to the people….
Wow, what do you think is happening now? Our Senators do not represent we the people, they represent those who gave them money to run, and they don’t have to answer to anyone. The way it was originally set up, the state Senate appointed their National senators, who in turn reported to them, if they stopped representing the wants of the State Senate, they were replaced. as it has become now the U.S. Senate hase become a life long job, that generates millionaires.
We have already repealed an Amendment, the 18th (prohibition) was repealed by the 21st Amendment.
Very slippery slope!
Good for you Utah!
Sounds to me like the state of Utah could be a national security risk
I agree whole heartedly! These Senators should be taking direction from their constituents and not special interest groups for money. They should be explaining bills up for vote so each citizen has knowledge of cause and effect and to vote accordingly.
Let’s do away with the 16th while we are at it!
