The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
I’ve been saying this amendment destroyed the country for years.
Absolutely!!!
This is one of three recommended changes for the Convention of States Project
Great idea. Long over due
Interesting concept. Of course our state representatives are mostly corrupt, so it would accomplish nothing.
Yeppers, the Utah lawmakers are attempting to move away from electing senators to giving themselves the power to appoint them. Who all is in favor of more political cronyism? The founding fathers were also, mere mortals, fallible and capable of making mistakes. But THEY acknowledged it. That’s why amendments are possible. I live with Utah legislators decisions, give them more power? Oh Hell No!
This one needs apealled. Glad someone brought that up 🙂
Steven Chaston the same patriot act that Hillary supported in 2001 and again in 2006?
How do you defend and ignore her faults?
Never happen
Cowboy Man, this is one area we will have to agree to disagree. The 17th amendment allows for the popular vote of senators by the people of the various states instead of the state legislature picking the US Senators for us. One doesn’t have to be a genius to figure out that state legislatures full members from jerrymanded districts would always vote the party line for US Senators. What that would mean in a blue state like California is that you would NEVER see another republican US Senator selected in California. Is that what you really want?
