The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
The 17th amendment was for the direct election of senators. Prior to its enactment the state legislators installed the senator according to the constitution. The ammendment is progressive it allows senator to remain in office indefinitely and makes them beholding to the special intrest groups.. About time this is repealed.
So why not amend that part of the Constitution to read no more funds allowed from other sources but your own state, and if cought you face fine and 5 year’s.
F**k him
Because they were to answer to the states and could be hired and fired at the will of the state if you voted other than the will of the state you were fired not in six years tomorrow!! And how it should be now never should have been changed. As for abolishing amendments there once was an amendment to make alcohol against the law and it was repealed.
While they’re at it repeal the 19 th to
The Constitution has been amended several times since it was first ratified. The 17th amendment was put into place in 1913. Looooong after the founding fathers wrote the original document. It changed the way Senators are elected. The founding fathers originally had the State governments, not the electorate appoint Senators to reign in the Feds in regards to States rights. The House was chosen directly by the people to insure OUR personal rights.
lol they cant repeal them all and the 17th was never ratified
Why is it that theres always a professor on Facebook that just has to make sure that ppl know how much more intelligent than you are. Lol!
The liberal democrats will sure try, won’t they?
Why not toss the 16th along with it?
