The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
repeal the 16th amendment
What an idiot! No way should this amendment be removed from the Constitution.
NEVER limit your attention the immediate implication of that situation. Consider EVERY variable and outcome set by it’s precedence. What does the repealing of ONE amendmendment show to EVERY progressive in the country that literally opposes the article 5 State’s rights issue? “Don’t BOTHER with challenging State’s rights- Attack them at a level beyond the State’s authority.” This is a major movement of the left to do exactly what Hillary said she wanted to do.” We need to ‘do something’ about the ‘gun lobby’, they ‘simply have too much power’ and ‘they’re standing in the way of justice’.” Yeah the gun lobby defending the 2nd is a major obstacle for them, but the insurance, health care, unions, aerospace, global and central banks, OPEC, foreign investors, the media, and 440 other industries “regulated” for political leverage lobbying for the Democrats…take your pick- every one of these regulatory agencies are the leveraging tool for democratic extortion. Add the IRS and ATF and BLM in there twice due to their limitless power…https://www.federalregister.gov/
If you look at the explosive growth of the federal government it was shortly after popular elections of Senators. The house was designed to represent the will of the people and the senate the states and people indirectly. Yes there is inside baseball but the selection is no way more corrupt that being able to lie and hoodwink majorities of people. As long as you have to start to fund dozens or hundreds of state races money influene is very much diluted. What is important is that federal power is checked because the domain of state power is the the driving interest and some vision for a national policy. You also will not have the level of populist socialism. If some of the money is removed from politics then senators have no reason to propose bad legislation until they get the campiang funds to make it go away they simply have to keep the state that sent them happy.
HERE WE GO AGAIN !!!!
You can’t repeal the Constitution. Only way is Article V
Can we get the 13th while we’re at it?
I agree. Keep the original intact. But there are some amendments that need to go, like the 13th.
You never hear any of them wanting to repeal the 13th amendment. How freeing that would be for all Americans to not pay our government to do nothing and dreadfully waste what they steal from us. Yes, I’m hopeful that one day in my lifetime. …..
Reapeal any part of the constitution and it’ll be war is what you’ll get instead!.
