The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
No the would be elected by the legislators of each state. And then they would be responsble to their govenors like before. Its a good thing

or you have a call for a costitutinal convention.. but if you do that it opens up the floor for any and all kind of amendments..anything thast 2/3 of congress vote to aprove could be put forth to the PEOPLE to vote on..and then still needing 3/4 of the states to vote it in…congress alown has ZERO ability to change the consitution..
A healthy idea for all!
Jim Graves I will refer you to article V. Congress can only vote (by a 2/3 majority) to refer repeal to a Convention of States. Even then, 3/4 of the states must vote in favor or it doesn’t happen. So no, Congress does not have the power to repeal an amendment, just to convene a Convention of States, where they very well be denied.
is there a reason to this?
Stephen Davis to be clear, your response to “Trump is c**p” is “so is Hillary.” I think they’re both c**p, and grow tired of stupid voters who’s best attribute about their candidate is that they’re not another candidate. The bar is exceptionally low for American voters…
Democrats have just offered support for repealing the 17th Amendment only if Republicans agree to join them in repealing the 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th Amendments.
Jennifer Therese Williams here’s a few things the older voters may not know or their just memorized by orange face!you left out all of Trump’s donations to the Clinton’s and also that Trump was a big supporter of the assault rifle ban than Bill enacted. What about his ties to organized crime and allegations of taking part in underage sex parties. Trump stands for nothing but his hypocritical statements he’s always spewing. He wants to be in charge of this country and the man did not know what the nuclear triad is. Not to mention his most recent statement that this country should never be in debt, all we have to do is print more money!
Of course they do…Senators are the only elections that they currently can not manipulate. they are state wide races not affected by gerrymandering.
