The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
If US Senators return to being elected by State Representatives
Leave the fucking constitution alone!!!!!!!! DAM
John Kemp did you read the article?
You can’t amend or repeal the first ten amendments
Kind of makes you wonder WTF the states were thinking in the first place to allow this to happen.
Where did the states think their powers to hold the federal gov’t in check, aka Article 10 of the us Constitution, were going to come from. I think 17th needs to go as well.
Now to enforce article 10 states have to oppose the fed gov’t. Where as before telling your senator to not vote for something should have been the easiest thing to do.
and the utah senator needs to rethink her statement, state senators, do not reflect the will of the people that’s Congress’ job… That’s why they’re always popularly elected.
State stenators represent the state ( yes by default that’s the people ) but when electing their fed senators they are electing those that would protect state rights.
I’ll be holding my breath awaiting this ever happening! Don’t they have more important things to worry about?
Yes it does
Yes they can
Congress the body that can do that. They did it for the amendment pertaining to alcohol
