The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
Dave Moore it sure wasn’t a problem when Clinton was doing all that stuff was it?
We should have term limits for asswipes like him
More likely to be accomplished via the Convention of States. Should also repeal the 16th.
Its about time someone got the ball rolling to get rid of that foolish amendment.
Well said, David.
Senators are to represent the state. By direct election they are nothing more than representatives, what do we need them for? The 17th should be repealed and power to state legislatures restored.
If only your rationale was rational.
The 17th was not part of the original bill of rights. It is a change(amendment) of the Constitution itself. The Senate was originally meant to be the voice of the state,by way of the state legislatures. The way it is now,the state has no voice in the federal government, that is why the fed gets away with many of the things it does. Repeal it,and see some sanity return and the 10th strengthened.
The 10th amendment demands the States have a say in our govt. Repeal the 17th to return accountability to the govt.
Once they repealed prohibition, we all know the entire Constitution was re-written.
