The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
If you check the language in the Constitution, the House represents the will of the people and the Senate represents the will of the states. Direct election of Senators has been used to reduce the power of the states to govern themselves. By beating the states into submission, it is now easier for the Federal government to impose itself on the individual.
Just ignore his serial adultery, bankruptcies, and boorish behavior. I’m sure he will magically become trustworthy once he is in office. You have lost your mind.
I know that repealing the 17th Amendment would currently benefit the Republican party as they control a larger proportion of statehouses than they do of Senate seats. The framers of the Constitution were uncomfortable with direct Democrat and this is why they created the electoral college and gave state legislatures the power to appoint senators. The original intent of the framers is irrelevant once an amendment is passed. The framers never intended for slaves to be freed and be granted citizenship, they never intended for women to have the right to vote, they never intended for 18 year olds to vote, they never intended for a two term limit to be placed on the office of President. These are all areas where Americans have decided that the framers were wrong and have amended the Constitution.
Actually they can. It does have to be ratified by a majority of the states though.
It’s people like you that are what’s wrong with this country. There I absolutely NOTHING on the planet more vile and corrupt as Hillary
You can repeal any of the bill of rights!!
The Senate is designed to represent the interests of the States and the 17th Amendment emasculated States allowing the people to elect both Houses. Weak States make for Federal arrogance. The 17th Amendment needs to go.
Allan Sheets maybe from the north’s point of view.
Senator wasn’t a life time job until after the 17th amendment
Tom, as I should have said, congress alone can’t do that! I was well aware that it requires ratification.
