The choice for the president at that time (a democrat) was whether or not to lose hundreds of thousands of American lives attacking a well fortified and tenacious enemy with ground troops, or attempt to end the war as quickly as possible. In case you don’t know, Japan attacked America. Pearl Harbor. Yes, a lot of people died, because of a war they started. WW 2 ended with millions of people dying. Millions more would have died if the war was not brought to a decisive end. Japan could have surrendered after the first bomb was dropped, but chose not to, they did after the second. Presidents are charged with protecting America, and Americans, that is their primary responsibility,They can’t back down, to any threat against this nation. When they do, all of the despots of the world see that as a sign of weakness. It is a dangerous thing in this world for a nation, particularly America to show weakness in it’s leadership. By the way, Kennedy was not shot because of The reason you suggest.Russia was trying to place nuclear missiles in Cuba, to threaten America with a missile base 90 miles off our coast. When Kennedy challenged Khrushchev, the Russian leader had to eventually back down. The embarrassment dealt a huge political blow to communism. That more than anything got Kennedy assassinated.
