At over three times the median U.S. household income, this Democratic congressman thinks he and his fellow representatives deserve a raise.
Rep. Jim Moran (D., Va.) told CQ Roll Call members of Congress are “underpaid” and he plans to introduce an amendment to correct the injustice.“I understand that it’s widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world,” he said.
While that claim is not technically true (the European Union is the largest economic entity in the world), let’s assume for a moment that being on the U.S. “board of directors” should warrant a raise for Congress.
Congressional salaries have been frozen since 2010, but regular members still pull in $174,000 per year – more than triple the 2013 median U.S. household income of $52,000. Leadership positions are compensated higher.
Additionally, the “board of directors” has not exactly been delivering for their “shareholders.” Unemployment remains a staggering 6.7 percent, and the labor participation rate hovers at historical lows.

It’s hard to be underpaid when they aren’t doing their jobs.
they make way to much money now!
No and I agree that they are currently overpaid and should not be allowed to give themselves raises…….especially since they are doing a lousy job as our Representatives.
If they were paid according to worth , they would owe the American people.
let those bastards live on welfare and see how they like it
then get another JOB
Demented!!
where else can you go to a job. get very nice lunches and dinners paid for. do nothing show up on the floor when you feel like it and get a pay raise and retirement for not doing your job. you go home blow smoke and money people put you back in office.????????
Their underpaid thats a laugh, they don’t even earn what they get now, if anyone needs a raise its the American people who work there fingers to the bone so these people can set back and claim money for raises not owed to them. If they insist on a raise .5 cent ought to do and then they need to give that nickle back to our service men and women and the homeless and starving. Unbelievable bunch of misfits.
if you don’t like the pay find another gravy job like you have.
