Liberals subscribe to magical thinking, believing that free college tuition and free health care to illegals will somehow end up a net win for the public. But reality often intrudes on this magical thinking like a big pimple on the end of your nose, and it is painful and unsightly. In this case, the laws of economics are intruding into the magical thinking of liberal politicians in San Francisco (as if there were any other kind there), and it is a growing problem.
San Francisco has declared that the minimum wage in the city, now being replicated in several other fact-challenged cities, will rise to $15 by 2018, and polls there predict happy, better-paid workers who will finally have a “living wage.” They have also insisted that this will not increase inflation and that it will be a boon to the minimum wage worker. That is a lie. And the impact is just now showing up as the first mandated rise from $10.74 to $12.25 is being implemented by certain retailers.
See who is raising prices in San Francisco, page 2:
Exactly
There are a lot of factors that go into the final price. Fuel cost, transportation cost, over head, health care and other benefits paid by employers, theft, and plenty more I’m sure I forgot.
Minimum wage can be increased but minimum buying power can not, as labor cost get absorbed in to the cost the price increases a similar percent of the cost, effectively nullifying any real buying power increase….
A raise for employees should be for good merit and over-performance of ones current economic worth.. The “minimum” wage should not reflect this. This is the flaw in your thinking.. People get raises who deserve them and while a business is performing well due to this performance. Your talking about the minimum not the average…
Social Security IS a Socialist service , as well as our fire , and police dept. , roads , and military. These are all things we pay into with all of our tax dollars , just as if we had free college, or medical coverage for everyone – same thing. Ron Gates- You use Medicare right ? It’s a social service .
Seriously guys, Crack open a book , and learn something. Many of our nation’s major services are Socialist in nature.
Unskilled workers should at least make a living wage…..they
Do not……flawed thinking? According to who?
That is an opinion……
Douglas Nelson if the minimum wage isn’t designed to be a “living wage.” If working 40 hours at minimum isn’t enough to live on, then get a second job. Yes this will create some discomfort in your life, but hopefully it’ll push the person to learn a new skill that justifies a higher wage. If you want to make huge profits, then start your own business, don’t expect those that have worked hard to have a business to simply pay more for the same amount of work being done. Raising minimum wage will only benefit those making minimum wage for a very short time, and will ultimately hurt them as cost for human labor becomes higher than the low paying jobs become automated by machines.
By putting the wage there, you keep thise folks “unskilled” as you said. Why not have them to better themselves and pursue bigger and better things. The businesses will close, due to lack of customers. If i was going to pay 20 bucks for a meal, it wouldnt be at Chipotle. JMHO
