Liberals subscribe to magical thinking, believing that free college tuition and free health care to illegals will somehow end up a net win for the public. But reality often intrudes on this magical thinking like a big pimple on the end of your nose, and it is painful and unsightly. In this case, the laws of economics are intruding into the magical thinking of liberal politicians in San Francisco (as if there were any other kind there), and it is a growing problem.
San Francisco has declared that the minimum wage in the city, now being replicated in several other fact-challenged cities, will rise to $15 by 2018, and polls there predict happy, better-paid workers who will finally have a “living wage.” They have also insisted that this will not increase inflation and that it will be a boon to the minimum wage worker. That is a lie. And the impact is just now showing up as the first mandated rise from $10.74 to $12.25 is being implemented by certain retailers.

Chris Long, I applaud you for taking the risk to run your own business and improving your local economy by paying your staff above minimum wage and, depending on the type of business, above $15 per hour for someone who does not know how to work yet.
Wages and inflation work in concert with each other, so as long as wages are tied to merit and productivity, they should increase at the same pace as inflation to keep up. Workers who prove their worth, typically have wages growing at a higher rate than inflation.
Making a profit in our economy is applauded. Profit does not equal greed. Your girlfriend, it appears is a victim of the Obama economy and Obamacare.
There was a study done by the different groups. It works coat.McDonald’s .08 cents on each burger to off set minimum wage increase to 15
Jon Holland is you’re not your.
Better than that this article is f**e
Ruben Juarez her company offers insurance. They arent a victim of anything. Any “small business” who has 50 full time employees should have enough income coming in to offer insurance and wouldnt be affect by the mandate from the ACA.
There is a difference in making profit and investing it back into your employees and making profit and cutting wages or hours to keep margins higher to please share holders.
Billy Bob Piepmeier it’s you who must be sick. Never said a company shouldn’t make a profit. Of course they should. But how do they expect their employees to take cuts when the company is making record profits? The employees are making them money at the current rate of pay but the greedy CEO wants to make more. That is not what made American industry great. And people wonder why Unions are necessary? Without someone to stand up for the worker we would be back in the days of working 16 days for pennys no health benefits and the company store.
I’m not surprised !
The price of eco li is skyrocketing.
This author is spot on. The laws of economics are always in effect. They are as immutable as the laws of physics, chemistry or any science. And they are in effect no matter what system one is under, Communism, Socialism, Capitalism etc…
“Unfortunately, the real minimum wage is always zero, regardless of the laws, and that is the wage that many workers receive in the wake of the creation or escalation of a government-mandated minimum wage, because they lose their jobs or fail to find jobs when they enter the labor force. Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount — and, if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed.”
– Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics: A Citizen’s Guide to the Economy
Don’t like the minimum wage?
If you’ve got minimum skills, minimum education, show minimum motivation and provide a minimum contribution to the workplace, why the Hell should someone be forced to pay you more? A raise in pay is tied directly to one’s productivity and how much revenue you earn for your company. If not, then it’s a loss for the company and anytime you make the cost of running a business cost prohibitive, people lose their jobs or others aren’t hired. Simple economics. Every time I got a raise it was because I was more productive than some others. I worked for and earned my raise. Why should a slacker make as much as I do? The first ones to get thrown out the door of many business’ will be slackers and *uckups/off’s. A business is not a charity. No one in their right mind starts a business to lose money. These min wage jobs are where you’re supposed to learn work ethics, showing up on time, being responsible for the duties assigned to you, carrying out instructions, how to make change (many can’t unless they have a register to think for them), working with the public. So, hopefully when you move on to better jobs, you’re a responsible, self-reliant and self-motivated adult and not kept as a whining five year old who needs to placated with candy and goodies to be motivated.
