Liberals subscribe to magical thinking, believing that free college tuition and free health care to illegals will somehow end up a net win for the public. But reality often intrudes on this magical thinking like a big pimple on the end of your nose, and it is painful and unsightly. In this case, the laws of economics are intruding into the magical thinking of liberal politicians in San Francisco (as if there were any other kind there), and it is a growing problem.
San Francisco has declared that the minimum wage in the city, now being replicated in several other fact-challenged cities, will rise to $15 by 2018, and polls there predict happy, better-paid workers who will finally have a “living wage.” They have also insisted that this will not increase inflation and that it will be a boon to the minimum wage worker. That is a lie. And the impact is just now showing up as the first mandated rise from $10.74 to $12.25 is being implemented by certain retailers.
See who is raising prices in San Francisco, page 2:
Govt implemented wage increases are across all CA establishments. So to go somewhere else to eat means going to Nevada…or Mexico.
It depends on where you are. Heard of a couple who went to a nice place to eat in NYC, got a crappy table by the kitchen door, got poor service, poured their own drinks and got a ticket for not tipping the waiter.
That is beside the point…………CEO’s are way overpaid, and it hurts the economy………The Conservative side of the aisle depend on you and your ilk, justifying the high pay of CEOs and Executives of corps, while denigrating the workers for a minimum wage hike, that would actually help the economy…….peace
And this why it doesn’t work people
How about going to the grocery store and cooking for yourself?
Is it safe to eat their food now?
Hello!
Why do people demonize a company making a profit? Profits are paid back to stockholders, not entirely pocketed by some a single person. That $1 price hike on a burrito bowl to give some kid a $1/hr raise is taking away from pension plans and mutual funds that a good portion of people rely on for retirement income (seeing how our Government loves to raid Social Security for everything).
An increase in wages or a decrease in prices is very necessary for America. An increase in wages is far simpler and less intrusive in the market than forcing price ceilings onto business’s.
Inflation will happen regardless of wage increase as seen over the past 50+ years. Will a minimum wage increase result further inflation? Yes most likely. But prices would continue to rise anyway regardless of that. Thus, why not? A wage increase will benefit a vast majority of people if even for a short time.
Either way were fucked. Either we take the libertarian approach and CEOs and businesses become more powerful than our elected officials and eventually control us. Or we take a socialist approach and have a much stronger federal oversight on the private sector.
I tend to err of the side of socialism were at least there is the opportunity to not reelect crooks. We can’t elect new CEOs.
Unfortunately both sides have massive room for failure and I really don’t hold much hope of things turning out the best for the common man. All forms of power lead to oppression, plain and simple.
I’m tired of hearing about this$#%&!@* Cost of living goes up every year. And the way the law was wrote when cost of living was introduced was that wages were supposed to stay aligned with the cost of living, which means everytime the cost of living went up EVERY EMPLOYER was supposed to raise its wages to align with the cost of living. However employers did not obide by the law and wages haven’t kept up with the cost of living for 30 plus years. So therefore when a state raises it’s minimum wage and employers raise its prices bc of it they should be heavily fined for raises costs.
