Liberals subscribe to magical thinking, believing that free college tuition and free health care to illegals will somehow end up a net win for the public. But reality often intrudes on this magical thinking like a big pimple on the end of your nose, and it is painful and unsightly. In this case, the laws of economics are intruding into the magical thinking of liberal politicians in San Francisco (as if there were any other kind there), and it is a growing problem.
San Francisco has declared that the minimum wage in the city, now being replicated in several other fact-challenged cities, will rise to $15 by 2018, and polls there predict happy, better-paid workers who will finally have a “living wage.” They have also insisted that this will not increase inflation and that it will be a boon to the minimum wage worker. That is a lie. And the impact is just now showing up as the first mandated rise from $10.74 to $12.25 is being implemented by certain retailers.
See who is raising prices in San Francisco, page 2:
Amen!
As a matter of fact yes, Steve Loving. CEOs are under tremendous pressure to produce results quarter after quarter. The consequences of not producing the results is termination. Once in one of those positions it is very difficult to find the next one. Many go for years before they find another job. As someone making minimum wage, the job opportunities are endless. That is why they are paid minimum wage – the jobs are such that with a few minutes training, anyone can do it. Hell even a machine can do it.
Also, if minimum wage workers get an increase everyone else wages will have to be increased as well. Labor unions also have their wages indexed to the minimum wage. That goes up, union wages go up.
If CEOs do not produce they get Golden Parachutes of even more money…They then go to other corps. and make even bigger money………I refuse to use any machine in any business………..And unions only make up about 9% of workers now that the Reagan revolution got rid of unins and sent corp. overseas…….These companys get tax breaks for screwing the middle class………Bring back tax code of the 50’s and 60’s when the middle class trived as well as business…….You are falling into the trap that Marx said would happen to capitalism….He said that capitalism would impode on itself …..This would happen when corp. strived for even more profit…the only way to do that quickly is reduce labor costs, raising their bottom line………..But Marx said, if that happens , who will have any money to consume the products these rich corp. produce?…no one and capitalism will implode……..Read about COSTCO’s CEO…….And there some others………..Think man, think…….peace
The typical Democrat response to everything. First build up a strawman then base your argument on it rather than the subject at hand.
The middle east figures into the hypocrisy of this page and its commentors.
I fully understand inflation and i understand wages havent risen anywhere near as fast as inflation. If inflation is a dirext cause and effect of minimum wage why has it risen faster than wages?
Also I buy from local stores, I own my own small business, and I promote local business through my business. So if you want to assume thing thats fine but they are incorrect.
If a company can post profits they can afford raises. This isnt the case in many service sector jobs.
In fact my girlfriend works in retail. Recently her company restrictured and made new positions. The catch? They lowered the wages for every position minus store manager. Then also cut hours of employees and hired more part time. Then people wonder why we have an ever increasing wealth gap.
The best part is people say well get a better job, hate to tell you but our country runs off the work of service sector. There are Millions of these type jobs. Thats why Walmart employee the most people of any US company now.
There is no way you could ever convince me that if you had a position under relentless scrutiny and you were able to negotiate a lucrative contract, which gave you an out because someone believed you were not producing, that you would not take it.
Ruben Juarez, how the hell are you comparing the capability of a CEO finding another job vs a minimum wage worker finding another job?!!!! Are you serious? If your making 6 figures a year and lose your job vs making $23,000 a year and lose your job…….if you are a CEO and can’t live off of some savings for a minimum of one year then you should of been the minimum wage worker to begin with!!! STOP THE DAMN HATRED FOR YOUR OWN PEOPLE, I AM SICK TO DEATH OF THE BASHING OF MINIMUM WAGE EMPLOYEES WHO SIMPLY WANT A DECENT WAGE!!!! My father always said, by God’s grace you are where you are, not by your power. I retired at 54 and I was a “stupid truck driver”, as the world calls us mainly, I didn’t go to college because I couldn’t handle it, so I did my best with a talent God gave me……you know how many college educated men I worked with in my profession??
If Chipotle raises their prices to offset the cost of rising wages either people will pay more for Chipotle or eat somewhere else. If enough people eat somewhere else Chipotle will have to lower their prices or change their business model. If the national minimum wage is raised most retail stores and fast food restaurants will be forced to make similar changes. American business has survived every raise in minimum wage, the institution of the 40 hr work week, and child labor laws in spite of their protests at the time that it would kill them. If the CEOs making 6 or 7 figure salaries cannot figure out how to operate in a new business environment then they will be replaced or their companies will fail.
The Walton family are also liberals. Walmart lobbies for higher wages to drive smaller rival companies out of business. Think about that. Also, minimum wage isn’t supposed to be a living wage.
