Rand Paul is completely correct, of course, that there is no need for bayonets in local law enforcement. Bayonets are for hand-to-hand combat in battle and the only purpose is to kill.

Bayonets have been obsolete since the Civil War, when 58. caliber percussion muskets were accurate at 1000 yards. True, there have been exceptions when they were needed, but as an instrument of war they are generally useless. It took the Generals of all nations a World War to figure out that bayonets were inferior to machine guns.
