Rand Paul is completely correct, of course, that there is no need for bayonets in local law enforcement. Bayonets are for hand-to-hand combat in battle and the only purpose is to kill.

Better to have and not use them than need them and not have them.
Bayonets have been obsolete as a military weapon for decades. They are kept for three reasons:
1: As a means to ensure personnel have a blade with them for survival/utility and last ditch defensive purposes
2:Tradition
3: Prisoner intimidation and interrogation.
Any soldier will tell you the last thing a bayonet is stuck in is people.
