I asked the priest at my church years ago, how can a person raised in a communist country like Russia, get to heaven if he or she is raised not to believe in religion or God. His answer was, in his opinion, if a person is negligent of God, but is a good person, he or she will get to heaven before a person who was aware of God and Jesus and knowingly denies them. Maybe this is what the Pope meant.
