When the Pope visited Turkey in 2014, he prayed in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque towards Mecca and stated it would be wrong to equate Islam with violence.
“Fanaticism and fundamentalism, as well as irrational fears which foster misunderstanding and discrimination, need to be countered by the solidarity of all believers,” Pope Francis stated in a speech to Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other political leaders.

A pope is just a man. People who pay attention should be alert so that they are not deceived by these so-called religious figures… True religion is of God, not religion that has been made or organized by mankind. Thou shalt call no man on earth father. Depending on where you read or how modern the translation: “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.” Or otherwise stated, “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.” In other words, “And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father.” Also, “Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Christ.”
