Paul Ryan has released his New Year’s Resolutions, and, like many Americans, it’s full of promises he is unlikely to keep.
Among the top 10 list of goals is the promotion of a “conservative agenda” and “unity,” but given his track record, the only unity he may be advancing is that with the Democratic Party.
He has, for instance, already been praised heavily from those on the liberal left for pushing through legislation with funding for highly unpopular Democratic items, much to the chagrin of the party that welcomed him as a more conservative replacement for John Boehner.
While Congress has indeed been uncharacteristically bipartisan since his arrival, it is that very bipartisanship that angered the powerful House Freedom Caucus and led to John Boehner’s early retirement.
If Paul Ryan isn’t careful, his first New Year’s resolutions as Speaker may also end up being his last.
