Paul Ryan, Joined by 24 Governors, Asks for Halt to Refugee Program, But May Be Powerless

Our politicians are finally rising up to Obama’s plan to ship thousands of Muslim Syrians into our Country, including new Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.

Washington (CNN) House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday called for a “pause” in the U.S. program accepting Syrian refugees after the terror attacks in Paris last week launched by ISIS, and the House will vote Thursday on legislation to mandate it.

“This is a moment where it is better to be safe than to be sorry, so we think the prudent, the responsible thing is to take a pause in this particular aspect of this refugee program in order to verify that terrorists are not trying to infiltrate the refugee population,” Ryan told reporters.

“I, for one, don’t feel particularly comforted by the assertion that our government can vet these refugees,” McConnell said. “At the very least it strikes me that we need a pause or a moratorium because the American people are quite concerned and upset by the possibility of terrorist coming into our country through some sort of refugee program.”

According to USA today. Paul Ryan was supported by almost half of they country’s governors, as well.

WASHINGTON — At least 24 governors, expressing fears about terrorism, are taking action — through executive order, a request to federal officials or some other means — to prevent Syrian refugees from settling in their states.

Their stand in the name of public safety began Sunday and escalated quickly Monday, igniting a debate over whether states even have the power to refuse people based on their nationality.

The governors — in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin — were reacting to Friday’s attacks in Paris and the possibility that refugees seeking resettlement in the USA might include people with terrorist ties.

Twenty-three of the 24 governors are Republican. The lone Democrat is Gov. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire.

Amid their refusal to allow Syrian refugees into their states, Fox News asked Judge Andrew Napolitano if they have the power to stop them in the first place.

“They can legally say what they want, but they can’t really interfere with what the federal government does,” he said.

“The court has ruled that the admission of immigrants – whether for humanitarian purposes, political asylum purposes, or pursuant to the quotas that we have – is strictly a federal function,” he continued.

Should Napolitano be correct, and it seems the Obama Administration would agree he is, our representatives in government may be rendered powerless in fighting Obama’s plan that could very well welcome dangerous terrorists into our communities.
