Democrat and Republican liberals alike often excoriate those who think that welfare programs should not be parceled out indiscriminately, but should require something from the recipients. Back when Bill Clinton was fighting impeachment, he actually signed on to a welfare for work program, and amazingly, the welfare roles shrank!
It turns out that if people can get stuff for free, without having to do anything for it, they will. That should not be a surprise. The other thing liberals will have us believe is that welfare recipients have no responsibility for their situation. While that is certainly true in some cases, there are many more that result from poor decisions and behavior.
Starting late last year, North Carolina began requiring drug testing of new applicants for a state welfare program. A number of politicians decried the requirement as unfair, saying that it was too costly, and that it was onerous to those who would be required to take the test. The test was not universal and applied only to one program, but the results were quite surprising.
See test results on page 2:

It’s about time. Testing should be done for all applicants nation-wide
What about the elderly in nursing homes? 99% Are on welfare. We are a nation that cares for our elderly, frail, unfortunate. A drug test does not change anything. Poor is poor.
I had to pee in a cup to provide those benefits, I’d appreciate it if they went to someone willing to do the same.
Thank you for being sensible and reminding folks that so many on assistance actually DO have a job and are trying to support their families in a world that is rapidly rising in cost without a rise in wages.
Exactly. Being against accessible birth control, abortion and government assistance is so naive it’s almost laughable.
Allowing access to birth control for everyone is a hell of a lot cheaper than abortions or adding people below the poverty level. If you are SO CONCERNED with where your tax dollars are going (never mind those politicians lining their pockets!) then support access to birth control, proper sex ed and talk to your kids about sex.
My take on people being forced to take drug tests to keep their jobs is unAmerican. Essentially, you’re being asked to self incriminate, something they can’t force you to do in a court of law, but an employer can do it. If you’re not operating a crane, you shouldn’t have to ever do this. If you’re on drugs in the workplace, it’s fairly easy to spot someone who’s not operating on all cylinders. Sure, they should be dealt with in whatever way an employer sees fit. But forcing people to give an employer an in-depth chemical breakdown of the contents of YOUR body in order to put food on the table is just wrong. Nobody likes having some sullen lab employee hand them a cup and order them to go pee in it, and “don’t flush the toilet before you come out”. It feels embarrassing, not to mention, nobody talks about the 30% potential false positive. What then? You’re having to defend yourself as though you were arrested. I’ve known people who had false positives, and it was a living hell of worry for them to get it rectified. Not only is it invasive b******t for welfare recipients to have to do this, but it’s invasive b******t if YOU have to do it, unless, of course, you operate a crane. Your body and your life are YOURS. Being forced to let someone quantify the contents of your body is real life ‘1984’.
About time!
You don’t need welfare if you are buying, dealing, or using drugs!
Must get tested for EACH check!
assuming someone is on drugs because they didnt show up is not true science/statistics. i also wonder how much of this was just weed. just bad journalism.
Are you against the idea of drug testing people who receive welfare benefits?
