Kerry: Maybe some NSA snooping was wrong

U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry said Friday that American spy agencies went too far in some cases, although he suggested he thinks surveillance of foreign targets has left the world a safer place. Kerry said he’s working with the President to fine-tune U.S. surveillance policy and ensure that the National Security Agency (NSA) doesn’t commit future offenses or violations.

Using talking points similar to those revealed in a recently de-classified NSA document, Kerry said, “We have actually prevented airplanes from going down, buildings from being blown up, and people from being assassinated because we’ve been able to learn ahead of time of the plans. I assure you, innocent people are not being abused in this process, but there’s an effort to try to gather information. And yes, in some cases, it has reached too far inappropriately.”

Either President Obama was aware of various levels of ‘inappropriate’ spying, on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on the Pope, and other world leaders and should be taken to task for the offenses or he presided over an out-of-control – and expensive – espionage system with little oversight. Kerry’s suggestion? He says that Obama “is now doing a thorough review in order that nobody will have the sense of abuse,” the BBC reports. “We are going to make sure that does not happen in the future.”
