As the migrant situation continues to heat up in Germany, police raided two homes in a rural village in search of a suspected Islamic State commander after the SPIEGEL TV tracked him down with tip offs from Syrian activists.
The raids took place in Sankt Johann, a small village in the Southwest German state, Rhineland Palatinate. A spokesman from the prosecutor’s office said the two men targeted are suspected of “taking part in the Syrian civil war” and are members of a terrorist organization.
He was identified as a man called Bassam, who is believed to be responsible for the deaths of dozens of people. The 32-year-old man allegedly fought for the Islamic State in the eastern city Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor before leaving via Turkey to seek asylum in Germany.
