You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

Hmm riding a horse is sounding better and better every day. Maintenance is by far much cheaper in the long run. Grant it travel would take longer, but I do love a good scenic route.
They don’t want you to discover that your car has a remote access so someone can override your driving while you are driving your car.
This has the ability to drive you off a cliff or into oncoming traffic remember rolling stone reporter that hit a tree in beverly hills in a new mercedes with a satellite link radio?
All your controls are wired into your computer yes your steering and brakes too, don’t think they cant lock you in your car?
Oooh, hope no one has stock in GM. I have bought my last one in 06. Vote with my dollars.
Wee put the sound system in the ren cen when I was12 ! THE security guards were steeling the speakers as fast as we could install them !!!! Lol.
If the title is in your name, you own it.
well, then they need to offer a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty!
With today’s lawsuits against car manufacturers they may have a valid point. You own it and modify it and it costs someone their life because of it…You should be responsible…Not General Motors!
Then wouldn’t this mean the manufacturer of the software would be owner, not GM? And won’t this put auto parts out of business if you can’t work on own car you thought you bought?
And that’s why I don’t buy GM. Let them sink.
If gm does that they will drive would be purchasers away in droves
