You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

This is why we should have let them go bankrup
Exactally. i had a 1999 maxima a few years ago. now i don’t have a problem changing the spark plugs on a car. haven’t had a problem for a couple of decades now or longer. however that car was weird and i wouldn’t attempt to change the plugs in it. it was a v-6 that sat sideways in the engine compartment to make room for the transmission. it started acting up once and i took it to a garage. turns out those cars have a coil that sits on top of the spark plug. i decided that since changing the front 3 would take an act of congress and i hadn’t even seen the back 3 no way was i gonna try to change the plugs. most of my other cars, if i wasn’t making enough money to take it to the shop i could at least do minor stuff myself.
That’s why I buy Ford
Another reason no GM products of today are not or will be in my garage while I own it.
THEIR CARS AND TRUCKS SHOULD BE ALL FREE……..OUR TAX MONEY BAILED THEM OUT…….WE PAID FOR THEM ALREADY……..AND THEY WANT US TO PAY THEM AGAIN WHEN WE WANT ONE……..STUPID……….
Actually when you register a vehicle or anything else you are turning over ownership of that property to the State. We only have the illusion of private property.
Well, I won’t be buying a GM then!
I think it’s BS and it’s the same with computer software. It’s abuse and the gov. should stop it. If I buy a software and have 2 computers or whatever, I paid for it and I should be able to do with it what I want. I didn’t rent it, there is no rental agreement, I bought it out right and it’s mine. MS gets away with this and so many other software companies do. Some even when you buy it, they tell you every year you have to pay a fee to keep it or it doesn’t work. BS gov. should step up and say enough is enough.
Mine is 14 and paid off as well…
That sounds a whole lot like COMMUNISM. Doesn’t it?
