You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

Then they can pay for ALL repairs.
The problem is that car’s are so over priced that by the the time the average working person get’s the car paid off the car’s are junk !! !
Tsk Tsk y’all been listening to the chief mess maker oblameverybodyelse !! Stop doing that . Really, y’all need to get a grip or we will make sure that you get along down past that new wall before the mortar sets on the bricks! People who pay for things own them ! Glory days of bailing you out the peoples pocketbooks
A lawyer of course, sly fox . Change the contract to ownership and no smoke and mirrors. Anything with Obama should be erased, wasn’t his money who bailed you out. The American People deserve the respect if their buying your product, you stand behind it 100%. We want a reliable vehicle, we want to work and make a living. Quit thinking you’ve out smarted people, makes you a fool when you do this.
lol, no you do not, own your car, the “state holds the title, you have a “copy” and you are only a tenant if you buy a home…
When you buy a computer you don’t own the Operating System that runs the computer but, you do own a license to use that OS software for the lifetime of that computer. But, you do own the hardware on the computer and you can install any Operating System software on your computer hardware that you own! So, GMC is legally correct about their software but, you don’t have to use their software if there is other software that can be installed onto YOUR vehicle’s hardware! This basically boils down to is it is your hardware & their software. And they are assuming there is no one else designing software for their cars but them and since they have a monopoly on the software, they think they own your vehicle since it cannot function without the software!
So, we need someone to create open source code for all GM vehicles that can be installed to replaced GM’s code or we need cars that don’t need computers! And we have the technology to make vehicles that do not have a computer controlling every single function of the vehicle.
Personally, I’d like to see someone create software for their vehicles to replace their software and then give the vehicle owner the ability to access that software to tweak their vehicles to run and function as they desire! You can take a GM or any other make of vehicle into a dealer or a mechanic and the GM software can be modified to do everything from change when & how your transmission shifts gears to the performance, gas mileage & on & on!
We don’t buy GM cars since the big bill out.
Simple solution? STOP BUYING GM!!!
I wonder how many people wished they had saved their old clunkers rather than turning them over in the Cash for Clunkers scheme.
Keep them then.
