You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

Yeah…..GM can kiss my$#%&!@* If I paid it off I’ll do whatever I want to MY CAR. I’ll push it into a lake when it dies. What you gonna do about that GM? you think it’s yours right?
Wait just a moment. If that is their position then shouldn’t they be paying for the repairs and up keep of their “leased” vehicles.
the paper i have saying its payed off says other wise.
I have Ford products and Dodge. Bought my last GM in 1995 , piece of junk.
That is why none of their products are in my stable and never will be.
They can go ….. well, you know 😉
Thats because GM is trash and won’t last any longer than the lease. I have a derelict 2008 impala that falls apart faster than I can keep pieces parts replaced. I need that bumper sticker “honk if parts fall off”. You used to be able to say buy Jap, its made in America…your big 3 are Mexican and Canadian. Not any more. But still, put trash in, get trash out…
No will be buying Toyota from now on
This was part of an agreement between all auto manufacturers and the government for the clean air act in 1993. They add all the emissions controls and they have they have the right to build software that only the manufacturers dealer can perform the work. 1993 was the beginning of the end for this country. This was allowing big corp to have control over things situations they normally never had.
Good..then they can pay for all the repairs it needs..
