You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

Chevy did the same thing!!
I bought my Ram P/U from Chrysler and they financed it!! Paid it off in 8 months and have title in hand so it belongs to me!!!
Then perhaps we need to go back to cars that have carburetors, distributors with points and a condenser and “drivers ” that control the brakes and park the cars instead of needing software to keep the car running and help drive. One other point, what happened to cars and trucks that had Six Cylinder Engines in a time when oil is costly ? Mmmmmmmmmmm? ( pondering) seems like the Automotive Industry and Big Oil are in Cahoots.
Well than there is no need to “buy” new. Let them fail.
No GM products for me.
No actually I own it and can modify it at will. Happens every day. After market car part manufactures part better than the original because of their ability to modify.
Really easy don’t buy GM
As long as I have clear title, dippy! I own my vehicle! But since you put it that way , the money we are paying you for lease is just a loan. So you can go ahead and send my money back to me now!
It’s just an engine. It will run just fine with out that computer. So if GM doesn’t want me to alter their code I’ll just pull all of it out and put it in a box and send it back. Then I’ll replace it with my own or just go to throttle body injection scrap all their stupid electronics put in a regular stereo and problem solved
Likely f**e news.
