You can trick your whip all you want, but GM says that car is still theirs, no matter what you’ve paid. In a hearing this week, General Motors attorney Harry Lightsey said that purchasing and paying off your GM vehicle is a license agreement and not ownership.
The U.S Copyright Office is holding a hearing on whether anyone other than the vehicle’s manufacturer has the right to alter the that car’s copyrighted software. With modern design being what it is, this means almost altering anything about the vehicle.
Mechanics and private owners are saying they need to be allowed to make repairs on their vehicles to keep them running or maintain their business. But GM is saying that anyone unauthorized altering anything about the vehicle could create problems with the software and endanger the driver. This sounds more like a business ploy on the part of GM to hold a monopoly on vehicle repairs.

More F**e News! First off this f**e article is several years old now. All software is copyrighted and it means nothing. You simply can’t alter the existing computer program and make a profit from it. Tuning is legal because you’re merely adjusting the perimeters built into the computer which are designed to be adjusted +- a set variable. Sadly
Though hundreds of people on this page will yet again be stupid enough to believe your article even though it has been around for years.
No Problem I will never buy a car from Government Motors anyway.
Wondering how they’re going to know if you repair your own car. And what are they going to do about it? Come take their car back? We may end up riding horses again before we tolerate this.
You do the actual case was taken out of context by these subpar media sites.. hence the reason R&T, C&D etc. never picked up the story. This is a classic case of f**e/misleading news spreading like wildfire. This story has been around for years on end. I remember my dealer laughing about it back in 2011/2012 when it was in some misleading magazine article.
They do have a case currently going through the pipeline in regards to autonomous technology and specific electric drive components as someone with no experience can easily kill themselves or others by improperly repairing autonomous systems and electric drive systems. But that’s about the closest this article is to being real.
Liberal garbage!!!
