With the advent of cellphones as a standard device carried by hundreds of millions daily, the ability of citizens to film police and politicians in public settings has increased accountability for those holding positions of public trust.
Unfortunately, a growing trend of judicial tyranny could curtail a person’s right to access their phone to suddenly film an event unfolding before them in a public setting.
First Amendment rights advocates argue that the right to film public events should never be abrogated, given the protections of the U.S. Constitution.
But with the judiciary having more statist judges in place, it’s become more challenging to protect these most basic rights.

There are already laws on the books dealing with photographing people in general. It has been ruled that, in the case of celebrities’ and others’ in the public eye, faces, they have no right to an expectation of privacy.
