I would not drink the water from a shallow well unless it was my only choice.
I drilled my own well. Then I drilled my mothers and my aunts. I live on a sandy hill on the eastern shore of Maryland. Went down 32 ft. My water has been tested by the state and came back pure. Amazing what sand can do to purify water.
In the old days here we used a driving rig. You would buy a point to put on your screen pipe then add the other pipe in sections. Sometimes the drilling was done with a 10lb sledge hammer, sometimes a driving rig. Now we just wash them in. 1500 gallons of water in a tank and a ditch pump. Takes about half an hour.

Most people who have wells also have septic tanks. I would never drink from a shallow well. To risky. It would have to be a last resort for me. The water should be tested weekly
