You bunch of naysayers!! People have been digging there own wells for 6000 years. Just do it and have the water tested.

Lol I do this for a living. These wells are not the norm in this area. We have a few areas around that this style well is possible but not many.
Only option for the majority of people.
This is a very tried and true method for washing in a point well. I did something very similar for my garden. It works very well in sandy soil where the water table is high. And it can be an effective way to provide irrigation for gardens, etc. But since these are not deep wells, the water coming from these point wells is usually NOT potable.
