For those who have grown a bit cynical, the idea of ethics in government might appear self-contradictory. In other words, we might be able to have one or the other, but not both — at least not at the same time. This thinking is partly a by-product of the very public ethical lapses committed by those in government positions.
As easy as it would be at this point to launch into a diatribe against the Clintons, who have taken corruption to new levels, they are really just one part of the problem. And it distracts us from the fact that there are government officials who do exhibit a high level of ethical behavior in their spheres of responsibility.
The problem is compounded by the need to review the behavior of government officials when potential ethics violations are discovered. What this implies is that we have the government monitoring the government. The potential problems with that are obvious.
As Mr. Trump prepares to arrive in the Oval Office we see how this system can go awry. More on page two.
Chaffetz is out of line. There is no indication the head of the government ethics was doing anything inappropriate. He, just like legal counsel from multiple previous POTUSs on BOTH sides have clearly stated that having Trump’s companies held and run by his sons is in no way sufficient to prevent critical conflicts of interest. Previous POTUSs have had to put their investments in blind trusts. In NO way is having family members run your companies in any way equivalent to a blind trust, nor does it solve Trump’s conflicts of interest.
Great
Let’s go back 8 years and teach some ethics to the whole obama cartel
If they didn’t give a c**p about the Clinton foundation then they clearly were not engaged in what’s right for America.
Please refer Elizabeth Warren for ethics training because her expressions and questionings are so unprofessional.
Do you realize that the two major independent charity evaluation sources both investigated the Clinton foundation and both gave them the highest rating in terms of transparency AND in getting the highest levels of donated funds to their designated areas of need? (For that foundation it’s health, education and welfare for single mothers and children in 3rd world countries.) Mind you these agencies do not evaluate whether the sources of donations might have issues of conflict of interest, they just evaluate if money is being siphoned off and if it’s being spent appropriately.
So I think your outrage is a bit misplaced. Conversely, the Trump Foundation made illegal contributions to the reelection campaigns for the Attorneys Generals for Florida and Texas, at times when both individuals were deciding whether their states would join in the lawsuit against Trump University. Hmmm… who is the most obviously ethically compromised… ?
Chaffetz and Gowdy have been the true guardians of ethics through out this period of rampant corruption by Obama, Hillary and the like. The current lap dogs on the Ethics Committee never said a word about IRS targeting, the Clinton Foundation, unconstitutional, violations of oath of office by Obama and his appointees, etc.
Better watch out liberal children. You all make much money on legislation you passed through stock buys beforehand. That slope can become very slippery and there is a big pile of$#%&!@*at the bottom waiting for you to land in it.
The truth revealed.
