California on High Alert for Volcanic Eruptions and Earthquakes

With the ongoing eruption of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii and the recent 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines, experts are putting California on alert for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

The Ring of Fire is truly heating up. The United States Geological Survey lists 169 volatile volcanoes across the Western US, Hawaii, and Alaska with 50 deemed a “high priority” and are under scientific monitoring for an eruption. Three volcanoes, in particular, are at “very high” risk of blowing up.

The Ring of Fire, also called Circum-Pacific Belt or Pacific Ring of Fire, is a long horseshoe-shaped seismically active belt of earthquake epicenters, volcanoes, and tectonic plate boundaries on the fringes of the Pacific basin. The Ring has 452 volcanoes, which account for more than 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.
