Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was admitted to the Naval Academy after completing undergraduate coursework in engineering in Georgia and served in the Navy, including work with the fledgling nuclear submarine program.

After the Navy, Carter was elected Governor of Georgia, eventually realizing his national political ambitions when he was elected in the 1976 presidential campaign.

Historians consider his work after his time as president to have more impact than his time in office. Carter was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for advancing human rights.
