I think your underestimating the american population. Theres a reason weve made it this far. Im sure people would start freakin out and killin each other, but eventually they would find a way to survive. People will always find a way to survive when theres no other choice but to depend on themselves.

Electromagnetic pulse. If they detonate a nuclear bomb high in the atmosphere it will knock out all electricity. Without electricity to power the cooling towers all the nuclear power plants will melt down. And lots of other terrible stuff would happen as well.
With no electricity all the nuclear power plants would melt down worse than Fukushima. Propane storage facilities would explode. Waste treatment plants would shut down and overflow into the rivers, spreading disease everywhere. No food. People freezing to death. No clean water….
