10. John Quincy Adams

 

In 1824, John Quincy Adams ran against Andrew Jackson for the presidency. To Adams’ dismay, Jackson won the popular vote by a sizable margin. Jackson failed to win enough electoral votes to win, though.  The outcome of the election was decided by the House of Representatives, but speaker Henry Clay used his influence to help Adams win, via a series of corrupt backroom deals. Adams was accused constantly throughout his term of the illegitimacy of his position.
