Lena Dunham: ‘I Wish I Had an Abortion’

Speaking on her podcast Women of the Hour, Dunham discussed the subject of abortion, a topic that feminists like her have an almost morbid fascination with. In addition to revealing that she was raised to refer to pro-life people as “anti-choice”, the comedienne said she felt she “contributed” to the alleged “stigma” surrounding the issue and wished that she had undergone an abortion so that she could combat said stigma:

“Dunham said that she first felt this way after she was asked to share a story about having an abortion at a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas. Dunham told the “young girl” asking her for a story that she never had one and felt guilty because she believes she is a part of the stigma of abortion.

“So many people I love–my mother, my best friends–have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons,” Dunham said. “I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then to realize I had internalized some of what society was throwing at us and I had to put it in the garbage.”

Dunham made her desire to have an abortion clear in the latest of episode of her podcast, entitled “Choice.”

“Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had,” Dunham said.”
