Federal Court Rules Citizens Have No Right to Film Politicians or Police in Public

Free speech activist Matthew Akins has had a running battle with the Columbia, Missouri, Police Department regarding his attempts to film public encounters between its police officers and local citizens.

On multiple occasions, Columbia officers have stopped Akins from filming and arrested him for interference in their work. In general, the charges have been dropped at a later time.

Akins says the spate of arrests and harassment from law enforcement is brazen retaliation for the nature of his activist work — filming officers on the job.”

As a journalist and founder of Citizens for Justice in 2011, Akins claims he’s committed to monitoring police for accountability purposes.

He sued in federal District Court to get his free speech rights affirmed. The ruling went against him and he took his case to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
