David & Goliath: Tiny Christian Academy Bullied and Exiled by Canadian Government

Last month, Truth and Action reported on the Cornerstone Christian Academy out of Kingman in Alberta, Canada that was besieged with unreasonable and Christophobic requests to “tone down its religious messaging,” by the Camrose-based Battle River School Division (BRSD). The BRSD is a government-run department that lords over 26 different schools throughout Alberta. The original purpose of the Division was to present a very diverse array of schools that catered to specifically different methodologies for education, including those that were faith-based and theologically-oriented. The government of Canada, in turn, partially funds the BRSD alliance of schools. Until just recently, there appeared to be no problem with this arrangement.

That is, until the BRSD and the Canadian government decided that the Cornerstone Christian Academy was offensive and detestable; so much so, that they issued specific demands for the school administrators to begin the systematic piecemeal destruction of its prospectus. The school identified itself as a “quality” educational facility. This was deemed reprehensible to the government and the BRSD officials who demanded that they remove the word “quality” from its description.

Understanding that the larger over-arching issue of the children’s education was the bigger concern than a silly dispute with the school Division over descriptions, the Academy’s officials relented and removed the objectionable word. My personal opinion is that this demand was itself reprehensible because quality education is a perception. What is quality to one may not be quality to another.

Once the inappropriate “Q” word was deleted, the school thought that it could move past that issue and get on with their education of the children. “Not so fast,” the BRSD came back at them. There was another teensy-weensy problem that they demanded to be resolved and that was an issue that they had with an intolerable, insufferable, and insensitive phrase that graced their website. Rather than talk about it, let me just list it here for you to read yourself. WARNING: Graphic Content!!!

9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Yes…it was a quote from the [GASP!] Bible. The CHRISTIAN Bible. The one thing that particularly set them off was the whole “men who have sex with men” line. Since the Canadian government now stood for gay rights and protecting them over other groups, they threw away the whole silly Freedom of Religion Dark Age philosophy and opted to place the Bible under its authoritarian boot to herald the arrival of the new 21st Century thought of social justice.

Well, now the Canadian school division has decided that it must no longer be affiliated with anything even resembling Christian thought, deed or theology. Read about how the Alberta school division has opted to exile the small Christian Academy from its 26-school alliance.
