California’s ‘You Must Stay Gay’ Bill

Get ready for the latest permutation in the war on heterosexuality. In fact, in the war on freedom. Our friends in none other than California are pushing legislation that would make it illegal for someone who is gay to choose to get counseling to become straight.

The idea that the Democrats, or liberals in general, are on the vanguard of protecting individual freedoms is the sickest of jokes.

In a brazen assault on our most fundamental freedoms, California legislators are considering a bill that would make it illegal for anyone to receive professional help to resolve unwanted same-sex attractions or gender confusion. This would apply to people of all ages and all religious and moral convictions. It is an absolute outrage, and it must be opposed vigorously.

For the last few years, a growing number of states and cities have embraced legislation making it illegal for minors struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions or gender confusion to receive professional help, even with the full support of their parents.

This would apply to a 14-year-old girl who was raped by her uncle at the age of 8 and now feels repulsion towards men and attraction towards women. If her parents stood with her and she wanted to meet with a trained counselor to help to get to the root of her attractions, in some states, that would be illegal. No professional counselor or therapist or psychologist would be allowed to help her.

Yet in these same states, if an 8-year-old girl believed she was really a boy and wanted to receive professional help to affirm her female identity that would be perfectly legal. A counselor could tell her parents to encourage her to dress and identify as a boy. That counselor could also recommend that, at age 10, she start taking hormone blockers, then prepare to “transition” fully to male at age 16, then have sex-change surgery at 18, with hormones prescribed for life.

We are dealing with some profoundly fouled up people here. And the problem is with the legislators and policymakers who are in the business of promoting homosexuality, not choice. And now, under the force of law if they get their way.

The California LGBT Caucus recently introduced a bill that would ban counselors from providing counseling and adults from receiving counsel regarding unwanted same-sex attraction, behavior or gender confusion. AB 2943 would prevent so-called “conversion therapy,” known as Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE), and add it to the list of fraudulent schemes under the states’ Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA). California has already prohibited SOCE (SB1172) involving minors, even with parental consent. AB 2943 has been assigned to the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection. The bill is set for committee hearing on April 3.

AB 2943 prohibits: (1) advertising sexual orientation change efforts, (2) offering to engage in sexual orientation change efforts, and (3) engaging in sexual orientation change efforts. The bill prohibits every individual, whether a pastor, clergy, or licensed therapist, from advertising, offering to engage in, or engaging in sexual orientation change efforts.

This bill will cause harm by preventing counselors from providing counseling and adults from receiving beneficial counsel they desire. AB2943 is ideologically driven and lacks scientific justification. Many people have benefited from receiving counsel for unwanted same-sex attractions, behaviors, or gender confusion.

If AB 2943 is approved, victims of sexual abuse can no longer get counseling if they develop (as often happens) unwanted urges to engage in same-sex behavior or become gender confused. The bill would also make it unlawful for any person to sell books, counseling services, or anything else that directs people to trust in Jesus Christ to help them overcome unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion.

What else can you say? Despicable.
